Division 2 Playoff Scenarios for Last Two Weeks

Last week we listed out the playoff scenerios for Division 1 clubs heading into Week 16 noting that playoff hopes were still alive for most of the division. While D1 had a quantity of teams fighting for the top four spots, Division 2 has more quality teams battling for only two playoff spots in the north and south region each. Two teams can clinch the top spots this weekend while three teams currently outside the top two can still jump up.

Let's take a look at the seven teams whose games really matter this weekend.

KidSuper Samba AC (32 pts) - KidSuper can clinch the first seed overall with a win this week against Real Olé FC.

Currently in position, AKA “Win and You’re In:”
Sporting SC (28 pts) - The four top teams in D2 North all have two games remaining on their schedule leaving a lot of possibilities on the table for the final two weeks. For Sporting it’s simple; beat CD Iberia this week and clinch the second spot in the region. The team can also still catch up to KidSuper Samba AC should that team lose both of it’s remaining games.

A loss against Iberia this week and a NYPD FC win would set up a potential winner takes-all match for Week 18, where Manhattan Celtic could still jump them both as well. Sporting would also clinch with a loss by either team still in the hunt.

Still in the hunt:
Manhattan Celtic (24 pts) - For the Celtics to make the playoffs not only does the team need to win its final two games against Brishna and KidSuper Samba AC but also hope for Sporting SC to lose out the final two games. The team would then clinch the final playoff spot for D2 North and earn a right to try and return to Division 1 for the first time since the 2016-17 season.

NYPD FC (23 pts) - The spring season has seen New York’s Bravest win four of their five games while putting the team in the playoff conversation. The team needs some outside help to get promotion it’s fate is its hands more than Manhattan Celtic. To make the playoffs NYPD will need Celtic to lose at least one of its final two games and for Sporting SC to lose this week against CD Iberia.

If the team can then beat the struggling FC Spring Valley this week, then that will set up a Week 18 match between NYPD and Sporting where the winner will advance into the final playoff spot.

Real Olé FC (20 pts)
CD Iberia (20 pts)
Central Park Rangers Reds (18 pts)
Brishna (17 pts)
FC Spring Valley (2 pts)

Polonia Gwardia NY (34 pts) - A win or draw this Sunday against the NY Ukrainians will clinch the top seed for Polonia.

Currently in position, AKA “Win and You’re In:”
Stal Mielec NY (31 pts) - Stal Mielec’s next game will take place in Week 18 meaning the squad may clinch the final playoff spot this weekend without kicking a single ball. A loss or draw by Manhattan Kickers will eliminate the team from the playoff hunt and leave Stal as the second best Polish team in D2 South.

Should Manhattan win against Williamsburg International FC, then Stal must win it’s game against FC Japan on Sunday, May 12. A draw would result in the final decision coming down to tie-breaker procedures since both teams would be even at 32 points.

Still in the hunt:
Manhattan Kickers (29 pts) - Manhattan needs to beat Williamsburg International this weekend in Richmond Hill, NY if it wants any chance to get into the postseason. The team’s strong offense has allowed it to stay in the hunt this long and a win against the recently eliminated WIFC would put all the pressure on Stal next weekend.

Should the Kickers win and Stal lose, the former would advance to the playoffs by a single point. If the Kickers win and Stal draws then the decision will come down to tie-breaker rules.

Williamsburg International FC (24 pts)
FC Ulqini (22 pts)
Beyond FC (15 pts)
FC Japan (15 pts)
NY Ukrainians (13 pts)
Panatha USA (0 pts)
