March has come and gone for the Cosmo League and its Division 2 standings have gone through quite the change at the top. Here are some of the winners and losers from the month's matches.
Winners: Hoboken FC 1912, KidSuper Samba AC, FC Spring Valley
The biggest winners for the month has to go to New Jersey's own Hoboken FC 1912. They have maintained their impressive unbeaten streak by the end of March with home games against CD Iberia and Stal Mielec NY, winning 5-2 and drawing 2-2 respectively.
Encouraged by joint D2 top goalscorer Cory Chaplin, Hoboken FC Head Coach Marco Chung has been quick to heap praise amongst his star man.
"Cory is a great athlete, having him in the midfield and being a leading scorer has helped the core of the team. He can really change the game in an instant. Players like these deserve to win and if they continue with how they have been playing we hope to see it come soon."
Hoboken is riding high on the sucesss and look to maintain their forward momentum in April where they face NY Ukrainians, Beyond FC, Panatha USA and FC Japan - All clubs who currently sit on the bottom 4 positions of the Southern Division table.
KidSuper Samba AC has managed to top the Northern Division going into this month. Starting March with a hotly contested 3-3 draw over NYPD FC, they proceded to get back to back wins against Malatyaspor USA and Manhattan Celtic.
A dynamic team capable of producing from anywhere on the pitch, most opposition defenders can't forget about Samba players Alhoussain Bah and Ebrima Jallow. Both men are ranked highly among the best goalscorers in the division and are the biggest assets to their teams.
They only lie a single point above both FC Spring Valley and Brishna - both teams are looking for the slightest chance to take top position as the season reaches its end.
FC Spring Valley are the last winners for the month as they've also collected only wins throughout the month. They have great potential to pick up wins against NYPD FC and Sporting Astoria SC, both of which they have won previously in the season.
Struggling to keep form early into the season, they've now been able to pull it around and have gone on a 4 game winning streak starting from November 2017. Never shy to give up, Spring Valley just might beat last year's final table position of 5th place.
Losers: Beyond FC, Sporting Astoria SC, Bronx Supreme
Wins have been hard to come by for these teams languishing in the bottom 3 of their respective Division. And Beyond FC is no exception. They currently sit in 7th place in the South Division with the second to worst goal difference in the league with only 7 points in 11 games.
However, Beyond FC can look for the possibility of winning a cup this year as they are currently competing for the 2018 John Kilby Cup. Their Metro Division side has already been knocked out by D1 Reserve side NY Greek Americans Reserve but the first team has their match-up against Doxa SC Reserve on April 5th, 2018 at Herbert Lehman High School in the Bronx.
With only two matches in the month of April for Beyond FC, they have enough time to train and get wins over their rivals to save their D2 Cosmo League season.
As the end of the season is drawing nearer, Sporting Astoria SC is losing time to collect wins.
The Queens-based club were knocked out of the John Kilby Cup with a 4-0 loss to D1 side Doxa SC and haven't won a single match since September. The team need to finish April strong with results that favor them with their next matchup against fellow strugglersBronx Supreme FC.
Lastly, Bronx Supreme FC has to be one of the biggest losers in March.
Where they have dealt with a similar fate as Sporting Astoria in the league standings, they have done this with a short roster of only 12 active players this month, forfeiting their mid-March matchup against FC Spring Valley.
Sitting rock bottom of the league amassing a measly 4 points in 11 games, they are in an unfortunate position with tough matchups against Astoria, NYPD FC and Malatyaspor USA althroughout the month of April and must be staying positive to keep themselves going this season.
Most Improved: Stal Mielec NY
Stal Mielec NY are one of the teams to look out come the end of the season. Since losing 2-4 to the high flying Hoboken FC back in October, they've since gone undefeated going into this month.
They are one of many teams to be in top contention of promotion come the end of the season and see their next games againstIberia, Williamsburg International FC and Polonia Gwardia NY. Keep your eye on them!
