NY Greek Americans striker Charlie Ledula was selected as CSL Player of the Week for the first time in his career after tallying a goal and an assist versus NY Athletic Club in a 3-2 loss in the sixth round on Sunday night.
Not a stat Ledula will be too fond of but he’s the first player to win the accolade in a loss in 25 nominations.
“I'm grateful but it would have meant a lot more if we had won the game but that's football,” the forward said.
NYAC was up 2-0 over the Greeks thirty minutes into the game. Ledula sent Conor Hunter on goal in the 35th minute with a cross.
Seven minutes later, the 26-year-old tied the game as he redirected Pat McCann’s cross in the net.
NY Athletic took the lead again in the 65th minute. NYGA looked for an equalizer but failed to convert their chances.
“I think we were our own biggest enemy,” Ledula said. “We made it hard on ourselves and we had tons and tons of chances that we just didn't put away, but that's football. All we can do is put it in the past and build on that.”
The former LIU Post Pioneers player followed his Player of the Week performance with three assists versus second placed NY Pancyprian Freedoms in the Fricker Cup on Tuesday. The Greeks won the encounter 3-0.
Ledula leads NY Greeks in goals and assists in his first season with the club, finding the net six times and registering six goal-passes in NYGA’s seven matches.
The big striker’s next game with the Greeks is an away fixture versus Hoboken F.C. 1912 on Sunday at noon at Laurel Hill Park Field 1.
