Colin Murphy’s 14th-minute goal guided NY Greek Americans to a narrow 1-0 win over Shamrock Sunday night at the Metropolitan Oval.

This win keeps NY Greeks hopeful in their quest of making the playoffs as they sit three points below Cedar Stars Academy in fifth place. The Rocks on the other hand already clinched the playoffs, being placed in second position.

The Greeks took the lead 14 minutes into the game when Murphy hit a low-shot from outside the 18 in the bottom left corner of Shamrock’s net.

The Rocks took four shots in the first half in attempt to equalize but failed to put the ball past NYGA keeper Andrea-Roberto Pellegrini. One of their closest chances was Alejandro Fritz’s curler from the top of the box in the 44th minute. Fritz’s shot curved inches away from the right post.

NYGA was rewarded a penalty two minutes later as Stephen Roche was fouled in the box. Roche couldn’t convert his penalty. The Irishman overhit the ball over the bar.

Roche attempted to make up for his penalty-miss six minutes inside the second half with a pass-shot from a tight angle on the right wing, but Rocks keeper Julio Tsasse palmed his shot over the net.

Tsasse drew another outstanding save in the 62nd minute to keep the Rocks’ deficit to one goal as Joseph Ruesgen controlled Marius Flabeto’s pass before steering a low shot. Tsasse was well positioned to make the save. The 27-year-old finished the game with five saves.

The Rocks only took two shots in the second half and weren’t able to put neither of them in the net. Hence NYGA sentenced them their third loss in the league of the season.

Shamrock will hope to bounce back from this loss in their next game as they host Lansdowne Bhoys at the Verrazano Sports Complex on May 17th. Meanwhile, NY Greeks’ next outing is against Zum Schneider FC 03 on Tuesday.

Two key notes

1.The Rocks are winless in two straight games: the Irish-based club drew their previous game to Manhattan Celtic 1-1.

2.Can the Greeks make the playoffs? : this win leaves them three points shy of the last playoff spot with two games to go against Zum Schneider FC 03 and NY Pancyprian Freedoms.
