Hoboken FC 1912 is finally back at the top of the Cosmopolitan Soccer League. One of the oldest, continuously operated soccer clubs in the United States won the 2021-22 Division 1 title last weekend after a hard fought campaign. This is Hoboken’s second league title and first since 1984-85.

The team’s win over Stal Mielec NY on May 22 sealed the result for head coach Steve Korfiatis’ team. The four team race for the championship to close out the year was intense and some of the best competition the league has seen in some time.

“It has certainly been a long, difficult season,” Korfiatis said in an email. “The competition in the Cosmo League has increased exponentially over the past few years and winning the championship is an extremely difficult feat for any team. In the end, we were the more consistent team over the course of the season and it showed in the results throughout the course of the year and reflectant in the standings.”

HFC came into the match not underestimating their opponent but still was able to control the game’s pace. Two early goals, including a Stal own-goal, put the home side ahead. The second was a great left footed finish from James Reed after a through ball from Tommy Lozowski. Hoboken had more chances but only found the back of the net in the second half. Reed finished off a cross from Liem Nguyen early on to make it 3-0, before the assist man made it four with a great left footed top corner strike after a through ball from Alban ZohnKevin Halliday scored the fifth after a pass from Timor Tcherniavski

Timor turned provider to goalscorer for the last two goals. The first with a header after a cross by Anthony Carracino and second with a shot into the low corner after another assist from Nguyen.

Hoboken now has the opportunity to seek promotion into the Eastern Premier Soccer League’s Metropolitan Conference. If they accept, they’ll play the champion of the Garden State Soccer League’s Super Division for the spot.
