Borgetto and Hoboken Remain Perfect in Week 5 Ahead of Clash

While Cosmopolitan Soccer League sides compete in state cups this weekend, last weekend's league action in Division 1 saw a lot of movement. New York Shamrock SC continue to suffer a championship hangover while both Borgetto and Hoboken are on a collision course for next week. Two clean sheets and plenty of offense included below:

Zum Schneider FC 03 II tied for a fourth straight game when it kicked Week 5 off early against New York Shamrock SC. The 2-2 draw at Roosevelt Island is the latest in a number of frustrating results but the points are still adding up. The draw also broke the Rocks two game slide and gave them a much needed point.

Shamrock's goals were scored by Chris Uy (penalty) and Rafa Carvalho.

Saturday, October 9
New York Shamrock SC vs Richmond County FC (0-5)
(Match broadcast by Game in Frame) (Highlights)
In a shocking result New York Shamrock SC were dominated, 5-0, by the visiting Richmond County FC. The defending Division 1 champions have struggled this season and were missing several key starters against County.

“(It’s a) tough loss but when a team is so short on numbers hard to be competitive in this division,” stand-in coach Robbie O'Neill said in the team’s match report.

Richmond took the lead in the 13th minute when Dardan Gjonbalaj fed Ady Gaye on the right, who played into the box and beat the keeper on the near side to make it 1-0. Jonard Kadriu made it 2-0 in the 50th minute off an assist from Daniel Tsygankov. The Rocks attempted to play more up after this but it left them far too exposed and ripe for counters.

Mark Shnadshteyn scored twice in the final 15 minutes, with Albert Ruci assisting on the first in the 76th. Efe Kaynar rounded out the scoring off a Gaye assist with about 10 minutes to go.

Richmond will host Beyond FC next Sunday, October 24, while Shamrock visit Kelmendi FC NY in the nightcap.

Sunday, October 10
Polonia SC vs New York Athletic Club (1-2)
New York Athletic Club scored all three goals in their 2-1 win over Polonia SC on Sunday morning at McCarren Park.

An own goal ten minutes in put Polonia up but NYAC evened the score less than five minutes later. Stephanos Hondrakis’ left footed free kick from just outside the box swirled into the back of the net with little chance of being stopped. The match was deadlocked from there until the 80th minute when Mike Hinkson swung in a cross towards Stephen Chapman. The jumping player headed in the ball for the game winner.

NYAC will visit Kelmendi FC NY next Sunday night as they look for a fifth win this season. Polonia will “visit” Manhattan Kickers at McCarren at 10 AM earlier that same day.

Beyond FC vs Manhattan Kickers (0-3 Forfeit)
Sunday’s match between Beyond FC and the Manhattan Kickers was ruled a forfeit in favor of the visitors. Beyond is deducted three points in the standings while the Kickers get their first “victory” of the season.

In the preceding reserve team match the Kickers defeated Beyond, 5-0.

FC Sandžak vs Hoboken FC 1912 (1-2)

A chippy match between FC Sandzak and Hoboken FC 1912 saw the latter leave with three points thanks to a second half comeback. The home team attempted to catch the historic side off by playing 11 behind the ball, content to defend and capitalize on a counter attack. Hoboken head coach Steve Korfiatis adired how well the promoted side stuck to the strategy.

“Truthfully they executed their plan well. They tried to block off any space we had going forward in the final third, abandoned the thought of possession and tried to win fouls in dangerous possessions after direct play forward,” Korfiatis said.

The referee’s whistle was a constant in the first 45 and neither team was able to find the back of the net, officially. Hoboken still believes they scored in the 26th minute when a Jordan Cimring freekick came back to Eric Terzer. The cross to Pete Luther was cleanly finished but the lineman called offside (video of the play is available for anyone to see). Sandzak’s best chance in the first half came off a corner kick shot that went wide.

The second half saw the home side get on the board first in the 64th when a Sandzak corner got away from the Hoboken defense, allowing for a finish at the back post. Hoboken answered with a corner of their own five minutes later. Cimring sent it in and Luther rose above the field to head in the equalizer. Another corner in the 82nd saw the chippinest cost Sandzak when Luter was followed in the box. James Reed stepped up and converted the penalty kick for the win.

“A lot of credit to Sandzak,” Korfiatis said in an email. “They are a really tough side and it is evident they have amot of cohesion in the team. They really challenged us to find different solutions. Our boys were just up to the test.”

Hoboken will host Division 1 leaders Borgetto FC next Sunday in what is sure to be a must-see match. Sandzak will visit Travers Island on the same day for a noon clash with New York Athletic Club.

A blowout earned Kelmendi FC NY it’s first win of the season while Stal Mielec NY’s struggles continued. Multiple yellow cards were shown in the 90 minutes and the chippy play was a constant.

The victors will host New York Shamrock SC next Sunday in a game that may seem more winnable than it did at the start of the season. Stal Mielec will try to rebound against Zum Schneider FC 03 II that same afternoon.

Borgetto FC vs Zum Schneider FC 03 II (4-1)

Borgetto FC is now 5-0 after defeating a short rest Zum Schneider FC 03 II, 4-1, in Sunday’s night cap.

Miguel Chung and Chris Valverde both scored unassisted goals in the match, increasing the former’s total as he currently sits near the top of Division 1 goal scorers. Alexis Santa and Angelo Bordenca were assisted by John Rodriguez and Chung respectively.

Borgetto will try to remain perfect next Sunday when they visit Hoboken FC 1912. Zum, who suffered its first defeat of the season, can look forward to a Sunday afternoon clash against Stal Mielec NY.
