NY Greek American started the second half of the season with a dominating 4-0 victory over Manhattan Kickers home at the Metropolitan Oval on Sunday night.

NY Greeks captain Shaun Foster netted his side’s first goal of the Spring season as he steered the ball past opposing keeper Sheary Bernard from the left side of the box in the 19th minute after reciving a neat ground-pass from Stephen Roche.

Alfonso netted a second goal two minutes later. Kareem Joachim spotted the midfielder on top of the box with a ground-pass from a corner kicker. Alfonso hit another dashing low-drive to complete his brace.

Colin Murphy closed the scoring in the 65th minute with a power-shot inside the box.

NY Greek American outside midfielder Nino Alfonso was delighted with the win as his side is currently fighting to hold on to a playoff spot.

“It’s good to come back [from the break] and get a good win, especially now, we want to stay in the top four until the end of the season,” the 23-year-old said after the game.

Alfonso netted two goals to help his club defeat Manhattan Kickers 4-0.

“I haven’t had a two-goal game in quite some time so it’s good to get some of the rust off,” the former Hofstra University player said.

Despite the 4-0 victory, Alfonso noted that NY Greeks is not fully back in form after the winter break.

“You can tell it’s been a few months since our last game,” he said, “that will come in time with a lot of practices and playing together again. It will come back in time. We have a lot of good players and we’re signing a lot more.”

Three key notes

1. Murphy’s on a sweet scoring run: NY Greeks midfielder Colin Murphy’s goal was his third one in two matches. The former Boston College captain had a brace in his previous game against NY Athletic Club.

2. Kickers’ rough losing run: This loss extends Manhattan’s losing streak in the league to six games.

3. The defensive midfielder with shots: After scoring a vital goal for NY Greeks in the Eastern NY National Amateur Cup final in the Fall season, Shaun Foster was on target again against the Kickers. Foster took the second most shots of the game, tallying five.

“For some odd reason the guy seems to find the goal every once in a while when we need it the most,” Foster’s teammates Nino Alfonso said. “He’s a good leader for this team, he’s the captain, he’s a good role model for this team.”
